Black-Eyed Susans

Black-Eyed Susans (25cm x 25cm mixed media on paper)

Something cheerful on a cold, dull day.  I think the proper name for these colourful daisies is Rudbeckia, but Black-Eyed Susan somehow sounds more homely.  They certainly brightened up a dull corner of a local allotment recently  and I loved the fantastic little shed with recycled guttering on the roof.  My fondness for sheds is now starting to rival my tree obsession……!

Trail through the Pines

Trail through the Pines (30cm x 30cm acrylic on mount board)

I’ve not given up on summer yet.  Trees remain a bit of an obsession still and this is based on a small sketch I made in August.  I was attracted by the shadows and the wonderful shapes of the pines.  Pure acrylic rather than mixed media this time.

Shady Tree in a Summer Cornfield

Shady Tree in a Summer Cornfield (25cm x 25cm mixed media on mount board)

A second painting inspired by my summer walk – looking uphill towards a shady tree on the horizon.  I worked on mount board which I pre-tinted purple, the complementary colour of the warm yellow of the corn.  Lots of fun with the mark making!

Cow Parsley and Summer Cornfield

Cow Parsley and Summer Cornfield (25cm x 30cm mixed media on mount board)

This mixed media piece was inspired by the amazing colours I experienced when out walking over the summer.  It was early evening and the sun was low.  The cornfield was bathed in a warm glow and the clouds took on a bluish- purple.  It was all rather surreal!

Bringing the outside in

California Poppy (6″ x 8″ oil on board)

I’ve been meaning to paint the California Poppies in my garden for weeks.  They are such cheerful things – opening up in the mornings to greet the sunshine and then closing up in the evening when it starts to get dark.  It’s been so hot though that I didn’t think I could manage to sit out there and paint them so I decided to pick just one flower, pop it in a tiny vase and retreat to the relative shade and cool of my kitchen to paint it there!

Lemons on blue (daily painting) (6″ x 6″ acrylic on board)

Many thanks to those who have been following my antics on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and for the likes and comments.  It’s great to get such support and encouragement.

Here is a small still life to end the week. It’s a bit of a zingy one!  I had fun playing around with yellow and blue.
